The story your customers tell without you.
A blurry office photo on a forum became a feature film, and no company owned any of it. Ralph Lauren knows the same trick.
In 2019, someone posted a blurry photo of an empty office to 4chan: yellow carpet, fluorescent lights, nobody in it. People started writing about what it was. Over the next few years, forums, Reddit, YouTube and TikTok kept adding to the story they called the Backrooms. A teenager named Kane Parsons made a series of videos about it, and A24 later signed him to direct the film. No company owned any of it.
The real one looks fake
Ralph Lauren had never seen a polo match when he named his brand Polo. The U.S. Polo Association has run the sport in America since 1890 and sells polo shirts too. Ask people which shirt is the real one and most pick Ralph’s. The little horse was at every cookout and every first meeting with somebody’s parents. The association wasn’t at a single one.
What both stories say
A brand isn’t what you announce. It’s what people repeat when you’re not in the room. The Backrooms grew because anyone could add to it. Polo grew because people wore it into their own lives, and the logo came along to every memory.
Where to look
Reviews and messages where customers describe you in their own words.
People who already post about your product without being asked.
The moments in your customers’ lives where your product quietly shows up.
Then put your budget behind the people already telling it. It’s cheaper than shouting, and more people believe it.
These are other brands’ stories, not our work.
A brand is what people repeat when you’re not in the room.
Be the obvious choice, not another copy.
