Jeep's biggest brand ritual was started by a stranger with a rubber duck
In July 2020, Allison Parliament left a rubber duck on a stranger's Jeep in Ontario with a note: "Nice Jeep, have a great day." The owner laughed and asked her to post it. By 2022 the Jeep ducking groups had around half a million members in more than 80 countries.
Researchers call the mechanism upstream reciprocity: a stranger does something nice for you, you can't pay them back, so you do it for the next one. Every duck that moved made owning a Jeep mean a little more, because you're one of the people who leave each other ducks. The owners built that. Jeep noticed, and teased its 85th-anniversary Wranglers with ducks.
Find what your customers could give each other, a gesture, an inside joke, a habit, and show them doing it. They build what your brand means in a way a product post never could.
